Well, the same happens in my spanish T39. I asked the same in alt.ericsson and it appears to be something with 16 bit and 8 bit characters...
Spanish has many accented letters and this in a way affects the characters...seems that there is no solution to this...

Well, hello guys finally somebody there asking same thing I have been wondering all this last weeks since I bought my T68, no answer at all,but I have discovered something that might be good at least to know, if you keep writting at least till sms 3 (you must have sms in long) ask the person you have send the sms how many did he/she got, I have check that they do received only one, so, you pay for only one not 3 sms as quote on the mobile, for sure is a bug Ericsson must fix, hope we get an answer someday, regards.

Hi Jucame! Well, I sent a long SMS (two parts) to my wife and the T39 actually sent two SMS's...I checked with Ericsson here in Madrid and they told me that there was no solution not even with a firmware, the phone is "BUILT LIKE THAT" it is a serious bug...I didn't know that it affected the T68 too...

The SMS standard is limited to 160 characters. It is not a phone limit (and definitely not a bug), its the SMSC.

In fact we should thank Ericsson for finding a way to send "long" SMS in multiple 160-character parts.

With EMS, the receiving phone "assembles" the multipart SMS into one EMS message.

Until MMS, this is how it works.

With regards to the question of "tha pound", it also happened to me. Near the end of the 160 character limit, it beeps and the word T9 was suggesting will make the entire message length over the 160 characters. In "long" SMS, it may also happen near the end of the last SMS part.

When composing message, and you're near the end you will see a remaining character counter at the top of the screen.

Arnold, then why do Nokia phones allow for T9 160 characters long SMS without any problem?
It's an Ericcson phone problem?

The T68 does. I use T9 to compose up to 160 character messages ("long messages is OFF").

Not likely. If you are using T9 with some national charset (other that default 7bit charset) the length of one SMS can go only up to 70 characters instead of 160.

Nokia displays your national characters as long as you write, gets 160 chars, but before sending converts the message to standard 7bit coding. You can try it - I did.
