just append &start=replynumber at the end of the thread url
e.g. in your example it would be
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=38811&forum=16&start=12

when i click on the sample link you gave it just opens up a new window at the start of the thread. same story after editing my link in the other thread.
perhaps the problem is at my end? (although, as i said i have done it successfully once before)
EDIT:
OOPS - my really really bad.
it does work. it's just that i remember it used to just scroll the page down automatically to the desired post rather than lop off the top of the page, as it seems to be doing now.
sorry masseur

when I click that link I get the following post
"Another tip (works with most newer Ericsson/SE phones)." snip...
which is the one you were after I believe.
The only setting I know that could affect the result is if you have your preferences set to show posts in descending order, but then you get the 12th reply from the end of the thread instead of the 12th reply from the beginning, so I have no idea what is causing your problem, sorry.

ah! yes, if you know the exact post number you can append that instead of &start and you get the effect you described
e.g. in your example...
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=38811&forum=16#post523303
to get the individual post number you just edit that post (which everyone can do but only mods can save the change) and in the url you will see the post id
