This has been bugging me for a while now so i thought i would ask you guys.back in the day we used to use pounds and number and inches and feet etc,the imperial measurements.them came metric, grams and kilos and centimeters and meters.well i understand all that-but why is pressure still pounds per square inch? what country are you referring to?

most developed countries tend to use the SI unit kilopascals (kPa) and multiples thereof as a standard pressure measurement. however, some specific industries maintain the old FPS (foot-pound-second) system or other variant - most notably the oil and gas industries in offshore work.

the USA seems to have retained a fair amount of the FPS system for day to day measurements, although the scientific community is sloooowly (and i mean glacial speeds) starting to come across to join the rest of the world. it's only in the past few years that the various american standards bodies have started to publish SI versions of their standards. why it's taken so long is anyone's guess, although "bloody mindedness" has a certain ring to it.

probably the main reason psi has stuck around so long is because people are familiar with it, and so find it easier to comprehend (especially since nearly all car tyres still use psi - getting back to that industry specific thing i mentioned).

(14.5 psi = 100 kPa = approx 1 atm)
