Dear Friends,

I want to buy sony t616 but have some technical queries.

My GSM network support is 900mhz and phone's network support is 850/1800/1900, will my phone work?

If it will not work, is there any possibility to change phone software and make it workable in my network?

no, you should get yourself a T610 instead as you would not be able to change the T616 to suit your frequency needs.

well that post suggests you can flash the T616 to T610 firmware and thats the first time I have heard of it.

I would have thought the frequencies that could be used would be built into the hardware rather than the firmware, unless the T616 is identical to the T610 and in fact these are quad band phones but only 3 are used depending on the market the phone is sold in. But that sounds highly unlikely.

Anyway, Cytech is our expert in this area and will be online a little later or perhaps someone who has experience of this can comment.

not totally unlikely, I've heard that before with Samsung phones as well that were manufactured as triband, but never approved for US and thus sold as european dualbands.

I have never been able to verify just how much truth is in this story though. However it seems not entirely unlikely that it would be cheaper to manufacture identical phones and market them differently, then actually manufacturing different hardware.

yes, but wouldn't it make more sense to market them as quad/tri-band rather than make the software restrictions for different markets?

if the t61x series was really hardwared as quad then it would behoove

to market them as quad if for no other reason than to beat moto to the punch - not to mention saving the dev costs on different fw versions. same story for the samsungs, and keeping them tri would still have more appeal even if they were only available in europe/APAC.
