I tried to use the SE update service and all goes well up to the "Terms and conditions for usage page". After that (and after checking and installing a huge file initially) the response is :"The application reported and unidentified error".
It gives the option "restart" with the same effect.

I tried:
- SE customer service (2 emails, still no answer. i.e. they answered asking for info and then forwared the question to somebody else)
- With proxy, without proxy (NAT)
- direct internet connection (another)
- different computer
- Opera browser
- with or without power cord to the sync station
- with and without Microsoft JVM (java script enabled in both cases)
- 3 days in a row
- searching this forum for help :)

Help!

Sorry my friend I cant help you there but I have this problem so please someone help me as well.

I have already done one upgrade, so yesterday I decided to upgrade my phone with the latest firmware. Once all the files from SE is downloaded to my computer at some point the phone is switched off as described by SE. So far everything goes as schedule. But when its time to install the files to the phone I get the message that communication with phone is not active(or similar). At the same time the usb link icon on the taskbar shows that the phone is not connected. But when the phone is on it is connected. Its really strange since the first time I did the upgrade I didnt face any problem. The fortune thing is that the phone is still working properly because there were not any files copied to the phone from the update service.

Does anyone has any suggestions?

Some problems are due to the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (that works as win ).
So use Netscape or Opera (have internal jave engine).

Close Antivirus or Firewall software, Dialer control or someother thing that can control virtual com.

If doesn't work.. try to change pc.

i've read that it can take 4 hours to download the upgrades with a 56k modem? how big is the file size of the down load? and could the upgrade be zipped up and emailed to someone with a 56k modem in a lot less time? here's wishing...

What do the upgrades actually give you?

Is it worth the download and the heartache - I am worried about killing my SE !

as for what the upgrade gives you? you would hope a more stable phone at the very least and hopefully a new feature or two
there is a thread here that attempts to cover the changes since don't seem to offer release notes

01-08-04: Latest P900 Firmware - Unofficial Release Notes

as for worth it? well there are two schools of thought. One is if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I subscribe to the other school of thought where I always want the latest firmware as it may well fix something I have yet to use, or fix a problem that occurs in a situation I haven't yet been in
