Right,
After about half an hour of searching i found some answers to some
questions i was pondering over. If i understand it correctly,
every phone company has it's own firmware which SE brand, stick
a number on the end of the CDA code and the online update
will then determine if it's gonna update your phone.
I have an o2 phone. I can't update to the latest firmware version
as it's o2 and SE/o2 whoever hasn't customised the update
with there logo, etc.....
Evidently SE generic phones have the latest firmware, so the thing
to do is get your phone flashed to SE specs.
(hold on with me here, this explanation is for me to understand it,
and hopefully newbies to 'get it')
So with our new revelation of P900's which home users can update, it
must be possible to re-flash the phone to the generic SE firmware so
we can
1: get the latest firmware updates as and when released
2: get rid of those lame 02 starupscreens that subconsciously make you
want to pee with all that dripping water.
I have read on allaboutsysmbian that people have done it, i'm posting questions now to those experienced,
1: how have you done this?
2: does this/has this screwed up your phone.
here is where someone HAS done it.

thanx for bearing with me!

I managed to do this using the unbrander technique like many others.
My p900 was also the O2 Version with the CDA162004/07, now it is the CDA162003/2 version removing all the unbranding and updating my phone to the latest version of the SE firmware of the P900.
Now my HBH-200 caller display works perfectly, however, i still experience BT problems like others, but as SE release newer firmware for the p900, i can update it using the online updater and not waiting around for 02 to release a new firmware which will probaly be never.
If you want to update yours, i belive you should take it to your nearest service centre to get it flashed to the non-branded firmware.
hope this helps.

bbasra -thanx for the reply man.
Yes, there is the option of going to a SE service center, but the
whole thing was is i was asking if it's possible to do it yourself
as we have p900s we can update, so why not update with the
latest SE software instead of taking it to a shop to do?
I know people have done it at home, it's just a matter of finding out how

I went to my local SE Service Centre in Southampton on Saturday hoping to get my Orange branded phone flashed and was told that they had to sent it away to SE for about 14 days and it was likely that it would come back with the same firmware version software on it anyway!
So now what?

@Dougproctor -
The reason why you got that answer is because that service center was actually following corporate rules. Unlike several others. They are not suppose to modify any customized software that was placed on the phone by a carrier. The reason why is because those carrier's actually pay to get those phones customized. So per agreement, SE would be breaking the underlined agreements by freely wiping away the firmware and replacing it with 'unapproved' software. By 'unapproved' they mean software that they didn't pay (per agreement) to have placed on there. SE is apparently starting to crack down on this and the first evidence is what they are starting to do with their online upgrade service. You'd be surprise at how many authorized service center perform these firmware flashes that are against SE corporate rules and agreement. They technically could get in trouble for that if a carrier found out and wanted to file a complaint.
Although some may not agree with the problem corporate may have over this, but that's the price you pay when you get a cheaper deal on a phone by going through a carrier. I'm sure a lot of people paid almost less then half of what I had to shell out for my P900. But I understand the rules and regulations that come along with me buying a branded phone. I save myself the headache and purchase it sim-free and unlocked no matter how much higher the cost is. If you can not abide to those rules then don't buy it through a carrier.
