I just purchased a 128MB Duo (MagicGate High Speed version, MSH-M128A), and I noticed that it doesn't have the write protection Lock switch/mechanism on the back like the standard supplied 16MB Duo does.

Does anyone have any idea why this?

And how does one write protect data on these new Duos if they don't have the Write Protect switch?
Mine is a Sony branded Memory Stick Duo its kinda dark purple/blue in colour.

I purchased it from a reputable dealer, in fact probably the most reputable dealer of its kind in the country. The company in question is Jessops.

Looking at the packaging it says that it was Made in Japan and a Part No. 3-085-633-8 (Model No. MSH-M128A)

Thanks in advance.

I have 2 32mb Sony duos, 2 128mb Sony duos, 2 128mb sandisk duos and a sandisk 256mb duo pro and none have the write lock

perhaps they just aren't doing the lock anymore to reduce costs?

The only ones I have seen a lock on are the older Magicgates I got from Japan early last year. I have yet to see another lock on one. I never understood why they had to put them on there to begin with. I understood its function, but I don't think it was practical.

My supplied 16MB Duo has the lock as you say but my 128MB High Speed Duo does not.
Can't say it bothers me though as I never actually used it in the first place. U are in charge of your data, just be careful with important stuff and don't lend the card to anyone else!

I have a 128Mb MagicGate MS Duo ( MGS-M128A )

It has a LOCK switch on the back, never actually used it, or see a use for it in the future... most SD cards Ive seen have them aswell, so someone somewhere must require it?

@ Everyone

Thanks for the very interesting answers.

I am kinda relieved that it appears I haven't bought a dud.

But don't like the idea of not having the Write Protection Lock mechanism.

The reason for having the Lock is the same as why we have such things on floppy disks.

Because of Sony's market share, Memory Sticks are now the biggest selling memory card. With everything from laptops to Camcorders now having some sort of memory card, in time people will be exchanging data and memory cards as often as we now do with floppies. So the need to prevent absent minded deletion of important data is definitely needed.

There was really no point in having the lock switch (except for keeping MP3's from being deleted by mistake), as plenty of apps have to write back to the card to work properly.

masseur, where'd you get your sandisk duos from? How much less than the Sony duos? Do they work with the P900/P800?

I got tboth sandisk ones second hand, one from lilpee69er but I can't remember who the other was from, and yes they work perfectly on the P900

The sandisk 256mb duo pro came from a US ebayer but thats for my new Sony cam and doesn't work on the P900 (in case anyone wanted to start THAT again! )

the sony ones came from a person who sells on Amazon for 39.99 each
