Don't think this will work as you need to turn your phone off and then on several times during the update. Also, then phone is essentially non operational during the update. Hopes this help!

I don't think so m8. If you look at the requirments page you would need a PC. Thus, that eliminates that possibility right off the bat. Besides the phone shuts off during the update. Hence, you'd lose connection when trying to upgrade.

Even if you didnt need to turn your phone off, as the original firmware was removed, how would the phone know what a GPRS connection is?

You cannot update exactly for the above mentioned reasons.

The update installer basically does the following operations:
1) Downloads the most recent firmware for your mobile from the Internet
2) Erases the old firmware in the mobiles's eprom
3) Re-programs the eprom with the new firmware
If connection is lost during the first step the firmware is intact and you only need to repeat the operation.
If connection is lost during the second step (it takes a couple of minutes) you are out of luck. Your mobile is completely dead and needs to be re-programmed by a service center.
If connection is lost during the third step it depends from the percentage of the firmware transfered. First come Symbian kernel and libraries, then the basic applications and last multimedia stuff (music, videos, clipart...).
