hey guys
I live in Australia, and have to admit, I've never heard of the name "dongle" before discovering these forums!

What exactly does it mean?

It is a blue tooth or infra red adaptor for the pc by means of which the phone can communicate with the pc. This message was posted from a T300

oh, so I guess dongle = adaptor, but it's a little more specific to a device which can communicate?

interestingly, the word dongle dates back to at least the mid to late 80's with its use in computers. I recall the word being used for a parallel port device which looked just the the pc end of a printer cable, and which stored a unique serial number. The dongle had to be connected to the pc so that the software which it was sold with would be allowed to work. i.e. it was an anti piracy device.

We have dongles at work so that we can use Quarkexpress passport edition

They a good form of anti-piracy, but of course, people will always be able to get around them...
