what exactly does the memory stick duo adapter do? where does it go? i cant find anywhere on my p800 where it can go...

It's so you can use your duo with something that uses full size memory stick, like I do with my card reader, digi-cam... etc...
it doesn't go into your p8/900. Have you got a manual? might be worth reading.

MS Duo are the reduced size MS and with the adaptor you can use it in a standard MS slot such as in a PC/Laptop/PDA etc.
