ogg vorbis is smaller and better. i use winlame to convert files. its free (search google) and converts wav, ogg and mp3 (wav 2 ogg, wav 2 mp3, mp3 2 wav, mp3 2 ogg, ogg 2 mp3 and ogg 2 wav.
You will need either oggplay ( see www.my-symbian.com its a free player) or unrealplayer (not free but better sound and playlist support.) typical file sizes are around 0.5 megs a minute @ 64kbps. you can change the bitrate in winlame.
Hope that helped!

Do not recompress already compressed files, it's a waste of quality and space.

Get the tracks from a cd. Else the quality won't be better than mp3.

I disagree with the last statement. There is a plug in for Musicmatch or if you have Nero which is called "mp3 Pro". It can effectively compress an mp3 file another 10x which is 20x total compression with no loss of quality. I have personally compressed to 40kbs for use on my p800 and it is equal to a really good fm broadcast. You can compress at a higher bit rate if you want but file sizes are reflected on that. but on average a 6 minute track hovers around just under 3 mb's. Gewd Luck

have any of you tried compressing vidoes to 3gpp.
with a lower sound rate and still a great picture, a 4min video can be compressed to 3MB.
Videos or MP3s,
i know which i prefer

I use Ogg Vorbis and OggPlay to listen to Audio Books. 25Mins will fit onto a 16Mb Duo easily, I have one chapter that is 50mins and only takes up 23Mb.

There are tools available to split/combine Oggs if you can't fit them all on one Duo. (I used dMc music converter from dbPowerAmp) to convert the original Mp3 files to Ogg and yes it does get slightly bigger but at the time I couldn't find a cutter to split the mp3 files into chunks that would fit on the piddly 16Mb duo.

I ripped some music directly to Ogg and the file was considerably smaller than mp3 and mp3Pro.

SE say that the P800 Audio Player will play MP3Pro but it is unable to take advantage of the Pro encoding so treats them as poor quality Mp3's and I have to admit that the sound quality was very poor.

The p800 does play mp3 pro, however as the compression was designed to do, if you play it on a player that doesnt support them it will play as a regular mp3 anyway "WITH NO DEGREDATION" I have used low bitrate mp3PRO as well as higher bitrate mp3PRO, but I also use unreal player to play em', maybe that makes a difference but they sound great, even the lower bitrate ones sound decent enough.
