As data has become bigger part of cell phone usage, GSM cannot sustain high volume and high speed "data need" (luckily, not everyone has such need), but, W-CDMA has the capability and capacity.
However, W-CDMA won't wipe out GSM easily. To really see W-CDMA take control of the market, may need to wait for 4G.

No matter what happens, I believe that both will have to be supported. There are many people who do not want to change cell phones, as indicated by the fact that there are still the old Nokia's and old SONY Ericsson's hanging around. Also around, but very limited are the analog cell phones. There are the digital (more modern, but still semi old) cell phones around too. And unless the cell phone companies want to replace a whole hella lot of cell phones for their customers who don't want to switch cell phones, or release them from a contract or whatever, they will have to continue to support the old systems.
So in conclusion, no matter what is "the future", we should always have these around.
