Hi, I have just started to learn to program for Symbian UIQ devices and I purchased the book "Symbian OS C++ for Mobile Phones" its a great book and covers pretty much everything you need to know.

What language are you looking to program in ? Java is the easiest to get started with but there are a number of limitations. C++ allows you to do pretty much anything you like! You will need to download the UIQ SDK which comes with the tools required to build a Symbian application. It also comes with a number of sample applications. Although you can build applications with the tools provided I would suggest that you use a development environment such as MetroWorks CodeWarrior as it makes things a lot easier!

You can download the UIQ SDK for free from:

http://www.symbian.com/developer/sdks_uiq.asp

You can also download a 15 day trial of CodeWarrior from:

http://www.metrowerks.com/MW/download/default.asp

I am also planning on creating a website with my experiences and some sample code. Although I write code for a living I found it very difficult at first to follow the sample code as it isnt very well documented! Also there are a number of funny querks to the way the Symbian OS works!

Feel free to contact me if you would like any further assistance

Have fun!

Neil

Hi,

Regarding this book 'Symbian OS C++ For Mobile Phones', I think it comes with a Sony Ericsson P800 Software Development Kit (SDK) . I am using a P900 and was thinking if this P800 specific SDK will work for P900-specific development. Any thoughts?

Also, if you happen to know where in Mumbai I can get a copy of this book and another one by Jo Stichbury, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
