I have just acquired a p900 which i think is brilliant! !!! However i was speaking to a work colleague today who said that Sony are recalling the p900 soon and discountinuing it from July?!!!! !!! noooooooooooooway! This can't be true can it? Recall apparently due to battery and flip problems?. Mine is fine, i just charge it up every night, no flip problems so far...

You charge it up every night...

I think that answers the battery problem question then !!

My battery is fantastic and I have had my P900 for 3 months (approx). I followed the simple rule of conditioning the battery in the early days of ownership and I use a Task Manager to reduce unwanted backgound apps (battery life improved after a month of use). I have, for example, used my P900 all day today - hours (yes hours) of eBook reading, BT (again for a few hours), email, phone calls, lots of WAP and internet use and I still have 36% charge left. A friend of mine did have a problem with his battery - but I don't think he followed my advice about looking after his battery. Never had a problem with the flip. Where did your friend get his information?

Never heard of any flip problems.
And as for the battery life, I don't think they'd recall it for that seeing as:
a) they've been using the exact same design for over a year now already on the P800...
b) there are phones out there with MUCH worse battery life *cough smartphone cough*

Reassuring to hear! :):)
I did raise the issue with my colleague that the p900 was the flagship phone of Sony, heavily promoted on their website and reviews are very favourable in the PC mags. Why advertise an apparently faulty product! (Nokia 6600!! GRRRRRRRRRR!) my colleague said she heard the news from this site!!!!! !!!!! i have looked myself but cannot see anything aboit it!! Perhaps they are just jealous of my new phone !!!!!

I have found, on a personal note, that the battery has become mildly worse, and is getting moreso, after I performed the Orange online update... unless I am paranoid...

I appears to go down generally quicker through non-use, I did report once that an all day leave on, without use woul duse only 10%... not now the case with mine... much nearer 20% at present...

And if I use a program, internet, whatever, then the battery goes down visibly... but leave the thing alone for a few minutes and it creeps back up 5-6%... doesn't seem right to me... will have to pop it back to CPW soon methinks, maybe to get the firmware sorted, or perhaps to have the battery replaced... in so long as they replace consumables... though I am insured as well, so perhaps that may help...

Two not so well known tips to reduce battery drain:

1. Don't have GPRS attached all the time (Control Panel/Internet Accounts/Other tab and select "GSM" as preferred mode)

2. For screen saver use a blank screen.

Also, have you attempted the overnight charge trick? If not, give this a go as the recommended 4 hour charge does not really fully charge the battery.

Jah...

Cheers for the tips, but...

Yeah, I abide by all of that and more, and have done for the past 3 months or so...

Initial charge was for around 16 hours, and each subsequent charge has been very similar... indeed, I even wait for it to go completely flat, well on all but one occasion...

GPRS is always detached, SMan has killed all memory and thus battery hogging components, I haven't anything to use Bluetooth with at present, so thats always off, and I use Irda only to "talk" to my mother's lovely likkle Sagem (cracking value at £100 by the way)...

I will perhaps try formatting the phone first, since I notice through my browsing with Sman, that there are lots of little files left over from stuff I have long since uninstalled... Not that this is the problem, but its a start...

The only thing I am guilty of is using the clock when the phone is in standby... since I am too lazy to remember to wear a watch each day!...

I did think it was the animated gif I used as my background in flip closed mode which was the culprit, but having removed that, I can only link the problem to the Orange update...

Ok, so I am not a heavy user of the phone really, though games are my vice on occasions, and it is on it's 4th, going into 5th day now, with 9% left...

So why complain, I hear you say, well because it was so much better... that is, I used it more then and it still lasted a good few days... I can actually see the battery go down quite a few percent in a matter of minutes... only for it to go back up slightly shortly afterwards... just seems odd... and I have noticed some others complain of battery issues after the Orange update too... so this seems the problem... which is typical... you wait ages for an update, only to find it makes things worse... though the big clock is great (don't know if i said this before:-)

On another note...

With regard to the self titled "recall"...

It is not that the friend has confused the actual recall of certain phone chargers as per the SE website, as opposed to actual mobile telephones...?

Something which has probably been mentioned here previously, and would undoubtedly affect the chargin of the battery! :-P

I think we all would know about a P900 recall... I think a lot of us visit this site multiple times daily. Did your friend give you details? I think that is total crap.

I do, however, have to charge my phone daily due to extremely heavy use. But I have had this problem with almost every phone I have ever had, so it's no big deal as far as I am concerned. I am just glad the initial Bluetooth problems have been ironed out.

well my battery is always 100% even when the red light starts flashing and the "battery low" sign flashes up.

some days it might show 0% instead (with a fully charged battery!) but never anything other than 100% or 0%

also when i charge and disconect the charger - the "lock keys" function does not return - meaning that i have to restart the phone each time!

does any1 else have these problems? i've been living with them for a while now - but its started to bug me that i cant tell how full my battery is, especially now i've started to watch movies on it.

i'm pretty sure a fw update would do the trick - but i'm waiting for a new O2 fw to appear on the sony website
