I've been a happy user of a P800 for about half a year now.
Now I would like to switch to something else. It is not that I do not like my P800 (actually, I like it a lot, still, I am only a bit tired of its bulky size and now-outdated design).
If I am looking for a good-looking, solid, Bluetooth-enabled, phone with lots of memory (to accommodate my 2000-something contacts), which one should I think about?
There is the Panasonic GD87/88, SE Z600, SE T610/630, Sharp GX-30 (soon I hope), and various breeds of Samsung, that I can find in my town.
None of them, as I have seen, are 100% satisfactory.
Are there other models that are coming to the market soon that would be: a) small; b) nice looking; c) feature-rich; d) have expandable memory (preferably, using commonly accepted types, such as MMC or SD)?
These 4 points are actually what I need. I do not need a camera (I've used the P800's only four or five times in half a year); I even feel I do not now need an MP3-player + video player + I-don't-know-what-else, all in one device.

Your insight and opinions are highly appreciated.

Which is that new SE phone? Can I look it up on the Net? Has there been an announcement or something to this effect?

Actually, I would personally prefer a product from Sony Ericsson, because I like them a lot - I think the only match, all in all, are the Japanese models.
But those guys are 2-3 years ahead of the rest of the world, anyway.

You've obviously not dealt with SE or Celestica repair in the UK then, have you !

I swear I will never again buy a SE phone and get treated the way I have been so far. I've had Nokia phones since 1992 with no problems until I bought the P800 and it's been the worst year of my life.

Each to their own I suppose

kradcliffe,

I am not from UK (although I've been to London). I've been lucky enough with my P800 - haven't had any problems so far. But I can assure you, if I had a problem with my phone it would have likely been much worse than yours.
The thing is there is no [single] repair or service centre in my town (to the best of my knowledge) that would be able to repair P800. Actually, we even do not have an SE repoffice or something like that - all phones from this manufacturer are imported either illegally or through various dealers (who're only interested in selling the product, not servicing it).

Coming back to the topic - what would you recommend as a replacement for the P800?

I agree that SE service centers are among the worst and that Nokia centers are far better. However, SE phones require fewer trips to the service center. Hence, that makes SE a better phone. The next phone expected from SE is the T650.

If you are not a die-hard SE fan then why not try a Nokia 6600?

If you are after a top of the range phone/PDA (perhaps I shoul dhave put that the other way around), then consider the XDA2... also known as the MDA2 or even the "imate"

The latter can be found at...

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=108654

Whilst you may not have considered a PDA Phone, the fact that you mention the necessity to store a high number of contacts may suggest that a a PDA centered, as opposed to a phone centered, device may be more up your street... though only you know the answer to that one...

The imate will fall down in the size stakes, it having larger dimensions in all but actual thickness when compared to the P800, but it is a very able device indeed, and may be worth a look...

Don't forget the P900... it is largely similar to the P800, but looks and feels a lot different in comparison, being a little smaller to boot... that could be enough to sway you... who knows !

Much also depends on whether you want to wait, or whether you are in need now, because you will always find something better lurking just behind the corner...

KSE,

Thanks for the insight.

Agree completely with your last point (...you will always find something better lurking just behind the corner..)

I think I'll wait until something new comes out.

yeah wait... not really any phones with enough features over the P8 to justify upgrading!
