I have just been browsing through the internet and I cam across this page
http://www.newswireless.net/articles/031118-petition.html
The bit that caught my eye was [quote] "Future roadmap" in a White Paper "The P800 for Enterprise Usage" which specifically promises upgrades to the P800 even after new models are released [quote]
So does this mean that we are legally entitled to an upgrade?
Maby I should e-mail sony ericsson and find out what is happening and why exactly they are ditching P800 users, even though there are so many of us still.
sorry if this has already been brought up btw...

If anything goes wrong with your phone SW wise you are entitle to a free SW upgrade as long as the phone is still under warrenty. After that, and if you want an upgrade for the upgrade sake, you will have to expect to pay for the work and the SW innstalled in your phone.

Besides, I strongly doubt SonyEricsson's roadmap is legally binding. Afterall, it represents what they are planning to do, not what they will actually end up doing...

Correct, Red_Five.
Unless SE signed a contract with you specifically promising continued SW updates, they are not legally bound to continue working on SW updates.

look it's never going to happen just buy p900
btw: they could probably do it but the phone would be a litlle slower and i don't think that p800 has enough ram....

Another point is to check the wording of any promises very carefully - the general concensus is that upgrades offer new features and functionality, whereas updates tend to be bug fixes, and the like.

There are still a lot of bugs that need fixed.
One big problem is the calendar bug in the US firmware. THE DATE LABELS ARE WRONG on some screens.
The speaker phone has never worked properly without a terrible echo on the other end.
If you scroll with the jogdial quickly on the applications shortcuts, the phone will crash many times.

You get free P800 software upgrades, not P900 software upgrades. Note that P900 uses UIQ 2.1 and not 2.0. If there are any software upgrades FOR THE P800, I'm sure SE will let you have it.
But not for the P900. They are different phones.
Based on some lines of reasoning, I should be able to upgrade my Mitsubishi Evolution 7 now that they have come up with Evo 8. Yeah, and I should get a free upgrade from Office XP to 2003. I paid for XP, and I get ALL the support due to XP. If i want the features in 2003, then I PAY for it.

Another possibility concerns the legality of putting UIQ2.1 on a P800. If SE have licensed UIQ from Symbian, it could be that their license only allows them to put 2.0 on a P800, and 2.1 on a P900. To do otherwise would be illegal.
