I did much research for about two weeks before i got this to work, so if this doesnt work, im sorry, you may have to look futher into it.

System Requirements:
Mac OSX: 10.2.8 or higher
Latest version of Bluetooth (http://www.apple.com)

What I'm Using:
Cingular Wireless
Sony Ericsson T616
D-Link USB Bluetooth Adapter

First step is to setup the bluetooth modem (cell phone)
System Prefrences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
Check "USB Bluetooth Modem Adaptor"
Show > USB Bluetooth Modem Adaptor > Bluetooth Modem
now you need to click "Show Bluetooth modem status in menu bar"
Click the PPP tab.

SERVICE PROVIDER: CINGULAR
ACCOUNT NAME: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
PASSWORD: CINGULAR1
TELEPHONE NUMBER: *99***2#

>APPLY NOW
Click the "Bluetooth Modem" tab. In the Modem drop-down select Ericsson Infared

>APPLY NOW
You can close out this window now.

Most will tell you to use *99***1# but i couldn't get this to work. If you can good for you, but for some reason it didn't like to work on my phone. Putting in *99***2# will use the Photo Messaging dial up option on your Sony Ericsson T616.

TURN THE BLUETOOTH ON YOUR CELL PHONE TO ON!
Sony Ericsson T616:
More > Turn On Bluetooth

Now go back to System Prefrences
System Prefrences > Bluetooth > Pair New Device
It will automatically search for your phone, when your phone has been discovered from the depths of hell select it and click the "Pair" button.
You will get a popup window asking for a passkey, just enter the number 1, click "OK"

Now you will get a popup asking you to choose the services to use with this phone.
Check Internet Access, the others are optional!

I followed the instructions you provided, and they worked. I had been banging my head against this for days. Calling Cingular 2nd level help got no results ... lots of "Huh's?". The key was seeing the username, password, and dialup number. I was being told what to do by folks having similar equipment, but using AT&T or T-Mobile rather than Cingular. They were quite different. thanks.

You are a saviour... I too have been back and forth with my providers about connecting to bluetooth. I got replies from oh you can't do that... to you need to buy some extra cables for that or my favorite one was Why would you want to do that? Oh boy... then I came acroos this site and found your post... you are the greatest thank you!!!!!

The info for the network provider is really
tricky to get hold of.

For AT&T you would use:

phone: proxy
user: guest
password: guest

I got this from the following site which lists details
of many other providers around the world.

An excellent description of setting up the T616
with OSX 10.3 (and 10.2?) is here:

I got it to work great with the modem script
they refer to on that site (Ericsson GPRS CID2),
I did not get it to work with the Ericsson GSM
script that was pre-installed on 10.3.

your post was AMAZING....it made my week when i found this literally, i was so ecstatic, i followed the instructions exactly and now i am surfing the internet on my powerbook when wi-fi or a hardwired ethernet are not available through a bluetooth connection (very slick)

my equipment was slightly different:

Apple Powerbook G4 12-inch (built-in bluetooth)
Sony Ericsson T637
Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger"

I settings i used were exactly like yours:

SERVICE PROVIDER: CINGULAR
ACCOUNT NAME: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
PASSWORD: CINGULAR1
TELEPHONE NUMBER: *99***2#

although i didnt' need to plug in a service provider and i used the *99***2# instead of the *99***1#,
once again i really really appreciate your post and it helped me out greatly

Totally digging this thread out of mothballs, but I'm in a similar situation where I had my former AT&T Wireless Ericsson t616 unlocked so I can use my Cingular SIM card. Now I can't connect to the internet with it.

I don't have a Mac. I have a PC. Can someone walk me through what I need to do?

Worked for me i have Windows XP (media center) its very easy to set up i will try to explain it:
Click Start
Click Connect to
Create A new Connection
Next
Connect to the internet
Set up my isp manually
Connect using dial up modem
Select Your bluetooth modem only
ISP name:cingular
phone number: *99***2#
username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Click Finish Your done.
I have a k750i and i noticed with built in bluetooth i need to set up a outgoing com port to my mobile make sure you do this or it wont work.
ALSO WINDOWS WILL TRY TO CONNECT TO THIS FIRST (if you checked the always connect box) THIS COULD COST YOU ALOT OF MONEY IF YOUR NOT CAREFUL
