Hi,

I have a T630 that was originally on O2, I have my vodafone SIM in it and GPRS works fine for WAP (it's definitely not making a call), I have set up a data profile with the internet APN and web username/password, when I try to dial from windows (dialling *99***4# but have also tried *99#) I get an "error 50: the request is not supported", the phone/pc connection is fine since the phone brings up a connecting message for a second or two just as the PC tries to dial. I have tried adding +cgdcont=4,"ip","internet" to the modem initialisation commands but this is no help either.

I'm fairly sure it's some sort of problem with either the network or my PC configuration since I can terminal to the virtual COM port that's assigned to the modem and do ATD*99# and get a CONNECT back so it's something about the login stage of the process that's failing.

If anyone has any ideas on this I'd be most grateful since vodafone support are drawing a blank and I've tried everything I can think of.

well it sounds like you know what you are doing but here is what that message means...

ERROR 50 The request is not supported. ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED
Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows still cannot find the network path, contact your network administrator.

I use vodafone in uk and do not need an init string. Also my data account has no username and password, just the APN of internet

btw, *99# uses the default CID of 1 whereas it appears you need 4 so your first dialling string would be the correct one

I assume that vodafone have actually enabled your GPRS internet (not wap) facility?

just some thoughts there anyway which may prompt a solution

Well I did guess that might be the issue, but I've asked their customer support people several times and they say it's the same enablement as WAP GPRS and that if WAP works I just need to add the internet APN to get access to it. Are you saying that they are definitely 2 separate enablements?

Thanks.

certainly I recall I had to get a separate enablement (nice word ) and many of the people I have helped here have had to do the same.

They all say WAP works fine but only after calling vodafone to get internet activated does it work for them

It often taken me several calls to get someone who knows what I am talking about or who can be bothered. I'd say about every 6 months I lose MMS capability and it never takes less than 3 calls to get someone to believe me and deactivate it on my account and reactivate it which then makes it work again!

Ok, thanks. I called them again and checked it and it seems I am enabled for both APNs so no joy there, but the error message along with the fact I know the connection takes place does seem to suggest a network fault. I suppose I'll just have to leave it with their 2nd line support. (unless anyone else has battled this hideous menace before) Thanks anyway.

Did you manage to solve this?

I have the same problem while trying to connect a Nokia 6310i to my Sony Laptop. All bluetooth connections are fine and all GPRS settings are fine. O2 say all account settings are fine. I gave up the last time I tried a year ago when O2 basically blamed the bluetooth on the laptop but I tried my wife's new 7610 connected via USB last night and got exactly the same results.
