Is there not a way to mute out the mic. when you are listening into a conference or just do not want somebody like your girlfriend to hear who is around?

I am aware of the C Mute on the T630 but it appears (on my phone anyway) to not always be effective. If I use the mute when using my bluetooth earpiece (HBH 35) all is okay but when I use the SE handsfree wired earpiece, mute simply does not work - i.e. it says it muted by everyone can hear all my background noise.......
I use the phone for conf calls which are often long and the bluetooth runs out of battery and I have to switch....
Anyone any ideas ?
