I've just been reading through all the posts, and there are a few misconceptions.
First off, the basic definition of polyphonic is the ability to play more than one note at once. A speaker is not necessarily required, although it'll enable them to be heard better; the earpiece on a mobile can achieve a fair bit of welly on a single tone, but this will decrease once it tries to sound two or three notes at once.
As for not being able to do it in software alone... anyone remember the ZX Spectrum? This ancient computer had a single channel beeper, but people managed to get two-channel melodies on games like Zombie Zombie, and even three-channels with proper enveloping on Vectron.
So in theory, it's achievable. BUT... who knows how much memory space would be required to build a three-channel composer on a T68? Mind you, those old Spectrum guys did it in 48k... we can hope, can't we?
Polyphonic ringtones (and in fact text formatting) were in the original spec for EMS, but got left off along the way, and the T68 was supposed to have all of this in the original release.

Actually, there's no standard called polyphonic ringingtones. When people talkabout polyphonic tones they usually mean MIDI tones, even they probably don't know it themselves. MIDI is a standard, polyphonic is just a word to describe that more than one note can play simultaneously. Polyphonic is an opposite for monophonic.

i'm not sure about polyphonic meaning midi. i had an sl45 and the ringtones you put on that were midi but it only accepts one note at a time midi files. correct me if i'm wrong.

The P800 has polophonic ringtones but not just 16tones no 32
so it is even better

i'd rather have a wave ringtone (such as a recording saying "pick up the phone you bastard" or something like that) as you can on panasonic & alcatel phones...

Yeh I agree, recordable ring tones are really good, especially on the sony phones, i would like to see them in future SE phones.
