I am looking into working-living and possibly going to school in Australia (Sydney actually) for a year. I was wondering how easy it was to get a Holiday working Visa? Do you have to be sponsored by a company before you go? Can you hold more than one job-a few part time jobs maybe?? I am planning on leaving around July of this year(2004). Also - I am a Graphic Designer, if anyone has any info on getting a design job in Australia that would help too!!! Thanks

it is possible to get working visas, but it is harder for "skilled" jobs because the government - like most others - tries to protect the domestic workforce. you might need a sponsor (i.e. a job lined up) for specific industries, or visas over a certain time period. it may be easier to get a "backpacker's visa" which entitles you to work and travel anywhere in the country. the only catch is that you can't hold a permanent job (i think the maximum time length is three months?) and there may be restrictions on working in your field of expertise/qualification. where i am at the moment there is a girl from holland with a backpacker visa working as an admin assistant, although she is a qualified speech therapist. if you want schooling here then the rules change again. you may want to contact your nearest australian embassy or consulate.

HSC is Higher Schools Certificate and these are the exams you do at age 17/18 (NSW is New South Wales - the state that Sydney is in)
Past Higher School Certificate Examination Papers and Notes from the Marking Centre
and there are quite a few more sites in the Australian specific
google
not sure if there is a relationship with ISC though

Thanks for replying masseur! Ok here it goes: the board which is followed in india, INDIAN SCHOOL CERTIFICATE is also followed in few international schools in australia. Now these exams are now running at the moment and are held five hrs before the exams in india. I've heard that there papers will be very useful for us candidates. And if someone can collect them on the specific dates, scan them and send the paper of the subjects required it will be nice...
