Hi,

I want to buy a tri-band phone in the UK and then, when I leave to study in the US for 4 yrs I want to take it with me.

Q - Will I be able to get a 'pay as you go' SIM card in the USA and fit it into my UK purchased tri band phone?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, all SIM cards are the same shape. And yes, we do have a few pay as you go, but from talking with some of my "Out of Country" buddies, apparently the ones that the US offers sucks.

So long as u buy an unlocked phone (or get it unlocked when coming to the US) then u can use a US sim card.

Great, thanks for the reply.

That's fine - I will probably end up getting a contract out there anyway.

Since i buy it in the UK, would it effect the reception in the US? I.e - If I bought the 6600 in the US would it be better? Or doesnt it matter, since a tri-band phone is..well...a tri-band phone?

Oh oh oh!!! That's right! In the US, we use the 850 and 1900 frequencies. However, in the UK (and outside the US), 900 and 1800 are used. Tri-band means that 3 of these frequencies are used. Get a quad-band for the best reception EVERYWHERE!!! Of course, the US uses different frequencies in different places, for example, here in Texas, we only use 1800 (I believe), but it appears that in New York and on the East Coast, they are getting 850 now.

Doesn't really matter where u buy the phone. The only thing that may be of concern is if ur phone carrier offers stuff like t-zones (T-mobile) or mMode (ATT). You will need to get the settings from the carrier but that's not usually a problem.

Settings? Bleh, like you said, settings are easy to come by, and are offered on the SONY Ericsson site. Like I said, make sure you know what bands your phone will function on.
