After installing, testing and uninstalling lot of software some of the files (data , docs etc.) are not uninstalled and use up memory. How can you clean up (format ??) this space without accidentaly deleting systems files. Any software available?

Yes that would be rather helpful! Havent done this myself, but suggest u could backup your phone before any installation and restore it at that stage later on. This is not the best way round it. A master reset and installation of the files again could be useful in the same way as maintaining windows by formatting and reinstalling it every year!

A program like registry cleaner would be nice but I don't think there is any around. The best method is to do a master reset, go to control panel> other tab>Master reset. This will bring the phone back to the way it was when you bought it, with out deleting any system files. The only problem is all the apps you installed will be lost so you will need to install them again.
EDIT: OOPS sensei was quick
