I want to buy a MP3 player that:
-isnt an ipod
-reasonable memory 1.5gb+ (none of those 256 mb rubbish)
-looks good
-not too chunky

with a budget of around £150- £200

any1 with any suggestions, i have looked around but the ones that fit my criteria are pretty ugly. I am intrigued by the Rio Riot ones but i can find many good ones.....that fit what i want.
however i might consider getting one with %12 MB (cos thats like 80 songs) but it would have to be cheap and small..

Thanks for any info

Today I ordered the I-River IHP-120. Somebody at work has got one and it looks excellent, and I've not read one bad user review on the web.

I'll let people know what it's like when I get it delivered

I just got my Xclef HD-800 and is VERY pleased. Had an HD-500 before which was my favourite toy for 3 months. Now with the "upgrade" to HD-800 I am an even more happy "gadget-guy".

It serves my needs perfectly since i already have a small flash player (Jens of Sweden MP100 with 256 MB).
I scanned the market completely and found that the HD-500 was best value for the money. However, I recommend you to chip in that extra money for the HD-800 - it's worth it !

Main benefits with HD-500 still beats the HD-800 though;
The HD-500 has a standard 2,5" harddrive (lap-top type, 20 or 40 GB). Even the battery is of standard type that can be found in well sorted electronics stores. So the two main weak points with a (any) harddrive type player can be replaced if there would be problems in future.

HD-800 has an 1.8" harddrive and built-in battery that will probably be more expensive and troublesome to replace if anything should fail in future. But I have very high trust in Asono support so far so it should not be a problem I hope (Asono is my local dealer for HD-800).

I have all music organized in folders with structure "genre-artist-album-tracks". Makes tree navigation really simple. Connected to PC with Music Match 8.2 I can organize playlists and ID3-tags easily. Playlists are saved directly to the HD-800 and so far I have not seen any limitations on number of playlists or how long playlists you have.

The real +1 features are:
+ Design. It looks VERY nice and solid.
+ Simple and powerful navigation (folder browsing or name search).
+ Sound quality. 5 different presets and one custom setting on equalizer is enough for my needs.
+ Battery life (12-16 hours depending on temperature + how much you use the buttons= lighting up the display).
+ Playlist (M3U-files), as many as you want, as big as you want.
+ really fast file transfer with USB2.0 : 16 GB in 20 minutes (4000 MP3-files).
+ works as an external harddrive and any data format is accepted for storing. No limitations with copy protected music.

Real improvements compared to the HD-500;
Size - it is now really pocket sized -actually smaller than iPod !
Much better radio, HD-500 radio was not really that good actually.
Auto synchronization for Line-In (that player can make separate MP3-files from recording a full Audio CD with several individual tracks).

For me 20 GB (or 18,6GB that is the real size when you re-calculate 20 000 MB in binary format) is slightly too small. I would like to see a 40-60 GB drive in this kind of player. But that's my very personal opinion.

Conclusion:
HD-800 is a very good player and should give iPod and iRiver a good match. It's my preferred choise anyway !
