It's the inside clock of the phone, to help with alarms and clock changes around the globe.If know that function when u travel from one country to the other, the phone switches itself on the other country's clock.
It also have something to do with the network clock provided by the GSM company which also monitors a lot of time-things.

Nothing really happens - it just does an internal test to make sure that the clock's ok, and then it tells you.

its like the cmos battery of a computer...

a nokia 3310 resets the time & date everytime you take the battery out...a T68i doesnt.

this is network dependent & when auto time zone is activated

if its not working anymore, your clock resets everytime you turn your phone off.
