Hi guys.
After reading that one member on here had updated their O2 UK P900 I thought "what the hell!", and gave it a go. Of course, I backed up my phone (which I'd done before anyway), and updated it... sans problèmes.

However, when I went to restore I encountered some bigger problems. The computer connects fine to the P900, and the restore begins. The dialog box appears, 'Verifying backup file' it says, the changes to 'Checking files on phone'. The status bar increases and increases. And then, as soon as it reaches the end, it thinks for a second (i.e. the HD light comes on on the CPU), then the dreaded hourglass appears and the program does nothing else - it crashes.

I guess this could be a huge problem, if I didn't have my contacts somewhere else - thankfully my trusty ol' 6310i (which, regardless of what anyone thinks of Nokia, is a great phone). I've been using that today, and so I'm not in any immediate peril, but obviously would hope to get back to the P900 asap.

Just so you know, I've upgraded to the latest PC Suite (v.2.3.1 or something like that), am using the Sync cradle, and have followed the advice about formatting the internal disc. Nothing is working.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you've done all that - it's probably a dodgy backup. Did you have AppForge installed on your phone when you backed it up? If so, that could be the cause of the problem. Either way, I don't know of any way to successfully retrieve the information. You have to abandon it and start again

Well, I don't think that's true. Trying to backup from previous backups also doesn't work. I mean, it doesn't seem to have any problem when it checks the back-up file... only when it goes to actually start backing up.

I've never had AppForge... heard too many negative things said.

Thanks!

Hi mate,

I had exactly the same problem. When restoring onto my MS Duo(D:), the restore went fine. But when trying to restore to the P900 Internal Memory(C:), I kept on running into problems.

What was basically happening to me was that the pc was running low on memory. The System Resources (found by right clicking on 'My Computer' icon and selecting the 'Performance' tab), showed at 85% free, connecting the P900 to the PC through the Sync Station, dropped it to 70ish%. But while the restore was taking place it dropped to 0% and thus the restore was not able to start to due the lack of memory.

I found this strange considering i have over 1GB of RAM, but anyway, i overcame this by disabling my Anti-Virus software, disabling all the items in my 'System Tray', and changing the Graphics Hardware Acceleration (found on the same 'Performance' tab as 'System Resource') to 'None'. After all that, I ran the restore, and it worked fine. . .

Hope this helps. . .

Manni

@Big_Singh: a good idea. In fact, I'm almost certain you are correct. The backup & restore program, when running a restore, seems to cause a huge memory leak. After it crashes I get the "Your system is dangerously low on resources. Would you like to shut down Explorer/Mozilla/whatever", whenever I try to open something.

I've really got it down to bear-bones:
Almost nothing loading at start up (well, programs that I can control with msconfig),
Hardware acceleration to none,
Res: 800*600, 256 colours....

Still, to no avail - the problem persists.

Does anyone know if there's anything you can do to combat memory leaks? (1.12.1.1 is my Backup & Restore version, in case it's important).

Anyway, I'm going to bed... will think about this is in the morning.

Thanks!

i don't know if it is already mentioned yet, but the program called backup inspector will allow you to open up the file that the back up creates, so that you can extract the files you want, and then put them back onto the phone manually, or just use them as backup
