If all goes according to plan, then tomorrow I should be the owner of a new P900. I'll be trying it out within the 14-day try-out period because, as yet, I'm not convinced that a) it's significantly better than the XDAII or PalmOS or b) I really want a phone that large (my current little Samsung is old but lovely).

So I'm wondering - what should I be looking to download and use immediately? What the essential applications I want to get? What sources of freeware should I be going to? What are the cool things everyone is doing on their P900? Is there a good offline web browser like AvantGo, because a P900 of said app doesn't seem to be available? What are the websites I should want to visit?

What should I want in terms of productivity software? Is there a definitive guide for getting and converting movies for the phone? What are the cheapest Bluetooth headset and 128mb card available to buy (UK)?

I've seen some criticisms. For example, how you can't sync files over 16Mb with a Mac (not that I have one, but I may later this year), that you can't sync categorised schedule events or contacts and I don't believe I can sync e-mail with Outlook Express. How much of this is true and how much can be overcome with third-party apps?

Is Opera or the default browser intelligent enough to cache pages so that, if you revisit a page, it doesn't have to download it again, which would cost you more GPRS cash?

The Symbian/UIQ interface looks ugly, but official screenshots of Symbian/UIQ (?) on a Motorola A920 look far better (lovely, actually). Is there any way to update the OS the P900 interface to look like this? Is it just a skin? Is that skin publicly available? If so, could it perhaps be saved off by an A920 user and loaded onto a P900?

What does the latest version of the P900 firmware offer over the previous version? In fact, what *is* the latest version?

So many questions, so little time...

Thanks

you definately need a calendar extension software like epocware's handy day 2004. the built-in calendar, as with all electronics, sucks.

i personally HAD to have an ebook reader and a calendar replacement, so i went with handy day and handy book. they're both now only a few dollars cheaper than the entire handy tools suite, which also gives you a database program, encryption software and a bunch of other things i can't think of.

i'm not really promoting epocware, but i just think that they offer a bundle that really boosts the productivity of your p900. those programs are the only ones i have installed on mine, but i use them extensively.

but you probably want games and movies, so i can't help you with that.

there also is a "office suite" that lets you view excel and word files, but you can't edit them. so i don't know how useful that actually is.

to edit the look and feel of your p900, you might want to look at tracker. it lets you customize everything. you can even make it feel like a pocketpc
i just have a mac-os theme installed, don't need more than that.

No. The P900 is far from a games device and I wouldn't care if it was. That someone has found a way to play Friends in the palm of his hand is shocking, but intriguing as, in a few months, I may be facing longer commutes.

Well that's less than useless. Is there *anything* on the P900 that will let you edit Word .doc files etc.? Surely this should be a prerequisite? On PalmOS, there is a suite - I forget the name - which lets you view and edit any MS Office files, which I'm not even sure you can do on PocketPC.

I've taken a look at many Tracker themes actually Most of them are hideous but I, too, would probably get an OSX theme - just like my WinXP desktop. I certainly won't be making it feel like a PocketPC; though I may be getting a PocketPC if the P900 doesn't work out.

Is Tracker commercial software or freeware? I thought you could actually skin the P900's interface regardless of using Tracker... ?

thanks.

Edit: I see there is Word/Excel editing software at http://www.mobl.com/software/UIQ/
