> Upgraded Firmware still not working with Cingular

Hi All -
I have a T68i that seems to not recognize the Cingular network. It was originally an AT&T phone that we unlocked, and then I had the firmware upgraded by the Sony Ericcson service people. It still does not see the Cingular network. The only settings I can find are "search for GSM network". The phone is still unlocked, so that shouldn't be it. Any ideas?
I would like to use the phone with Cingular, but most importantly I would like to use it in Europe.
Thanks!!!

I was dealing with a problem with this for one of my friends. I believe that the tower you are trying to access at the moment is a 850 tower, but the T68i only works on the 1900 (for the US at least, it works on 2 other frequencies for out of the US).
This is why you can't pick up a signal.
As for traveling abroad, the T68i will work everywhere (that there's reception), as it works on the 900 and 1800 bands.

Is that why it used to work with T-Mobile when I was with them? Were they on a 900 signal? If so that is fine, I will just use it in Europe when I am there.
Is there any way to confirm this info (that Cingular is using non-standard GSM?)
This would explain why the text messages work (GPRS) and nothing else...
Any way to convert it to work with Cingular's system too? Maybe when the companies merge it will work
Thanks for the info!

You didn't quite understand what I stated. Cingular is using standard bands. In the US, the two bands used are 850 and 1900. Those are the only bands here, and they are standard. I was simply saying that your phone isn't working, due to the fact that the tower that is closest to you probably transmits on the 850 band, as opposed to the 1900 one.
I believe that T-Mobile only works on the 1900 band.
No, you can't force your phone to work. It's a combination of hardware and software that makes your phone work on the bands. You could load the software to make it function on 850, but unless it's got the proper hardware, you won't get your phone to work on that band.

Thanks again for the info... I just want to make sure I have it straight since you seem to know what you are talking about. This phone is a tri-band 900/1800/1900 phone. 900 and 1800 are for Europe, and 1900 is for the US. Cingular uses a combination of 850 and 1900 in its network, and I am not near a 1900 tower.
Is this right?
If so, how do they ever make proper Cingular "World Phones" - are they quad band so they work properly in the US and Europe?
Thanks!!!

That is correct, you understood. I looked at this recently at the mall (World Phones). This is misleading, as it is not a true "World Phone", but simply is able to function in a few places outside of the US.
