Is anyone else disappointed that SE said that you could update the P900 through the update service? This is one of the reasons I purchased an unbranded SIM free P900 and there was never any mention in the description of the Sony Ericsson update service that some would work and others would not. I have contacted SE support but they just said that my phones CDA number wont allow it and I would have to send it in to get the firmware update. Why are they doing this? Why don’t they just let the folks that want to, update their firmware online?

I know this does not affect everyone but for some of us this really does feel a bit like the old bate and switch. They know lots of people buy their phones online. How are we supposed to verify that the unlocked SIM free phone is really completely unlocked?

Can we do some kind of email campaign or do not enough of us care?

well the reason I asked is because alot of people say that it doesn't work for them but when I try it does work. This seems to be the case for your CDA.

go to http://www.sonyericsson.com/updateservice/P900
click on get started now
choose the recommended manual verification mode and click next
type 162004/14 into the CDA field and click next

the response you get is...

-----
For CDA162004/14, the latest organiser version is R1A05. Now you need to compare this version number with the one in your phone.

Click here for instructions on how to find the phone software version.

If you have the latest version there is no need to perform an update, unless you are experiencing a problem with your phone. If so, you should always perform an update, even if you have the latest version.

so it appears you have the ability to update online though it appears that the latest version for your CDA is not the same as other CDA's

So, what is your point? They told us we could update the firmware online. My P900 is blocked from getting the latest firmware update. I can’t even get the larger time display let alone any of the other fixes available to others who happen to have the right CDA number. I have been able to upgrade my Pronto Pro’s firmware (Universal Remote), my set top DVD player’s firmware, my PC’s firmware and countless other gadgets over the years from home. Who would have thought that when they said with the new P900 you would be able update the firmware at home online, it would only be if your piece of hardware had the right CDA number? It just seems really petty that I am somehow less deserving of the latest firmware and the extra functionality that it may or may not afford.

@Tanquen

I think Masseur made it pretty clear in his post above that you could ALWAYS update your firmware irrespective of th CDA number. Read the post above clearly and do as he has explained.

I think I was more confirming that the possibility was there but it does seem that the latest version being offered is not the same as what alot of others currently have, i.e. R4A06

In most cases its the branded firmwares that take longer to get updates but possibly have not provided the update for your CDA because it has not been approved by your phone carrier.

who is your phone carrier out of interest? and where?

Stupid question ( but I don't have a P900 ... ): is it possible to fake the CDA number so he can install the R4A06 firmware ?
