Sorry to post on a subject that has been addressed hundreds of times allready, but I need a little clarification before I do something that I might regret. After much hunting around I came across a SE Service centre who will change my firmware from VF to SE. They are telling me that if they change it that my warranty is gone and there is a good chance that the phone will not work again. They told me that VF have protection in the phones that won't let the SE Firmware work. The guy in the service centre said he would check this out with SE and let me know( I know SE will say it can't be done!).

The Service centre is in Switzerland and the phone is Vodafone Ireland.

Can anybody tell me is my phone going to be destroyed if I get the firmware changed in this place?

Once again sorry about the post.
Cheers,
Dave.

Nope, if Vodafone put such a mechanism in thier software it would just be overwritten by the new firmware anyway. Don't listen to any of it... except the voiding your warranty part.

Yes, this is correct, you would totally overwrite your FW with a new one. I know this, as I have destroyed a couple of phones, yet brought them back to life with a simple FW upgrade/flashing.

So the general consensus is that if I bring my phone in and just ask them to do it, I shouldn't have too many problems. Is there anything in particular I should ask them for???

Thanks for the replies,
Dave

Just tell them you want EVERYTHING to do with Vodafone wiped off the phone and replaced with original unbranded SE versions (so that'd be the AVR, ARM and GDFS).

That is incorrect (I can tell that you don't flash/unbrand yourself). The AVR and ARM files are like your OS. They simply upgrade your phone's FW.

The GDFS, on the other hand, is where all the branding and slaughtering of your phone has happened. To unbrand your phone, simply have the GDFS rewritten. To upgrade your FW, have the ARM and the AVR rewritten.

No, YOU are wrong. Vodafone don't just use the GDFS to brand the phone, they use the other two as well. If you only flash the GDFS you'll still have vodafone's shit on the phone, including the red border that surrounds everything that you can't change even with theming.

As for 'I can tell that you don't flash yourself...etc' well thats total crap. I've unlocked, unbranded and upgraded around 150 SE handset all successfully. I'm just going by what I know from experience. You wont remove ALL of the vodafone branding by just flashing the GDFS.

virtualtears is right.

To remove the branding, you need to do AVR and GDFS. The ARM file is the same for Vodafone and non-Vodafone, but has to match the version of the AVR-file.

There are special AVR and GDFS files for Vodafone branded Z600's. However, if you flash a Vodafone Z600 with non-Vodafone AVR and GDFS, the phone will be Vodafone-free.

There is no Vodafone hardware issue or self-destruct mechanism.
