Yes, Linux is good. But the question is, how do you intend to use it? Some people still find it too difficult to use as a desktop OS, so this depends on how much you're willing to re-learn things the linux way

check out this site for downloads of various linux distros. (or you can directly visit the site of distro owner themselves.)

happy learning!

(i am a very newbie linux enthusiast myself)

So which one of those would you use for just general home stuff and web surfing?

Yes Linux is a good operating system....I have used Linux for a couple of years now, and i am very satisfied with it.....If you are a newbie I will recommend you to use RedHat or Mandrake.....

If you use ftp you can download the ISO image file from
ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/
There you will have several Linux distribution's.....

@Fingers
All of the Linux distros would be very capable of doing "general home stuff and web surfing"

But some are much friendlier to newbies, as jorns pointed out. Mandrake and Redhat are among the popular ones to those who are new to this OS.

Excellent, thanks very much, I'll have to try them out, I've always been quite interested in Linux but never really took the time to look in to it the way I do with other things, it looks like a nice alternative to Windows.

Some does say that this is the better alternative to windows - but that is their personal opinion.

If your level of tolerance to to sadistic and archaic tweakings and settings are high - this might be the OS for you. (ooops )
