Applications submitted to the competition must utilize features of the J2ME MIDP 2.0 specification (JSR-118). The competition covers five different game genres including Action/Adventure, Sports, Role-Playing Games (RPG's), Platform and Puzzle games, and is open until June 24.
The games from the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004 will be promoted globally to consumers. The entries will be published and promoted on a campaign website where consumers can cast their vote on the Ease of use / Game-play, Look & Feel / Graphics, Sound, Entertainment factor and Innovation of the games after testing them through an emulator. The consumer voting period will run from mid-July to mid-August.
"This competition is the first to give consumers a unique chance to evaluate applications that have not yet hit the market. This demonstrates Sony Ericsson's commitment to stay in tune with consumer demands at the same time as third party applications are made a natural part of our product offering," says Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President and Head of Product & Application Planning for GSM/UMTS phones at Sony Ericsson.
The top 20 games will be passed on to a panel of experts in the mobile entertainment industry who will make final decisions and select three winners of the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004. The aim is to select one winner from each of the major regions of the world; one from Asia-Pacific, one from EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) and one from the Americas. Winners will be announced on September 3, 2004.
"Sony Ericsson has announced several new handsets this spring that will set a new standard for mobile gaming. We hope that the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge will encourage developers to take full advantage of these and other mobile phones with great gaming capabilities, through offering cash prizes, marketing exposure towards consumers as well as commercial distribution of the games," says Ulf Wretling, Director of Content Development at Sony Ericsson.
The three winners of the competition will each get a $7,000 USD cash prize, Java verification paid for by Sony Ericsson through the JavaVerified™ program (www.javaverified.com), and prominent placement on Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads (Fun & Downloads) which is promoted as an integral part of the product offering.
The winners of the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge will be the first partners for consideration for pre-loaded content or top downloads links on coming MIDP 2.0 phones from Sony Ericsson. The winners will also be offered to exhibit as application partners in Sony Ericsson's booth at a major industry event after the competition.
In addition, all contestants will enjoy the benefits of global marketing efforts of the Game Developers Challenge and various consumer promotion activities performed by Sony Ericsson, as well as valuable go-to-market help through commercial distribution of all games via the Sony Ericsson Application Shop (www.sonyericsson.com/applicationshop).

All of the analysts agree that 2004 is the year that mobile gaming using Java technology will take off and begin to live up to its potential. There will be millions of devices on the market by the end of the year and this presents OPPORTUNITY for you, the developer!
Among the devices compatible with Java technology shipping this year, one manufacturer will make a very strong statement. Sony Ericsson has announced several new handsets this spring that will set a new standard for mobile gaming, starting with the K700. To encourage developers to take full advantage of this and other mobile phones with great gaming capabilities, we are offering cash prizes as well as worldwide recognition and distribution to the winners of the Game Developers Challenge.
The contest kicks off March 22nd, to co-incide with the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose and will end on June 24. Your entries will then be evaluated by both a panel of experts in the mobile entertainment industry, as well as consumers! That's right, Sony Ericsson will allow consumers to play your game through a web interface and vote on the winner! The top 20 games will then be passed on to our panel of experts to determine the final winners.
We will choose 3 winners for the contest, based on regions of the world; one from Asia-Pacific, one from EMEA and one from the Americas. Winners will receive cash prizes and highly valuable placement on the Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads site.
But this contest is not only beneficial to the three winners. All of the submitted games in the competition will be commercially distributed through the Sony Ericsson Application Shop, so you can start making money on your game. And naturally you will keep the rights to your own game.
It's time to get to work! Details of the contest, game genres, available devices and technical assistance are provided here on this site. Let's see what you can do!
Do THE Thing!
Make THE Game!
Be THE Star!
Best of luck,
Your friends at Sony Ericsson Developer World

The Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004 closed for submissions on June 24th. Through various online promotions, consumers around the world were invited to influence the future content available for Sony Ericsson phones by trying out the games on a special consumer campaign site between July 15th and August 19th. Consumers were asked to play the games through a web emulator and vote on the games by rating the Look & Feel / Graphics, Ease-of-use / Game-Play, Entertainment factor and Innovation of the games on a scale from 1-10.
The results of the consumer voting have determined which 20 games are in the finals and to be evaluated by a jury from Sony Ericsson and the wireless gaming industry.
The jury will choose 3 winners for the contest, based on regions of the world; one from Asia-Pacific, one from EMEA and one from the Americas. More than 130 Java games were submitted in the competition, and after performing testing of all the games to make sure they run properly on the phones and are good enough to be commercially distributed after the competition, we were down to 45 new games for consumers to play and vote on. Each game got equal opportunity to be displayed on the campaign web site with a screenshot, title, short description and the game development company's name. Consumers could view games randomly or by category.
