TOKYO (AFP) - Japan, China and South Korea (news - web sites) have agreed to jointly develop communications technologies for fourth-generation cellular phones to be introduced in the three countries in six years.
The three countries will soon begin working-level meetings on a regular basis to exchange views and promote joint research among their scientific institutes and private companies, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Sunday.
Japan's posts and telecommunications minister Taro Aso will meet his Chinese and South Korean counterparts in July in Japan to sign an accord, the business daily said.
The agreement is aimed at adopting a unified communications protocol for fourth-generation cellular phones, which are expected to come into commercial use around 2010.
The three countries, whose combined mobile phone markets account for about 30 percent of the world, will seek to standardise the protocol in the global market, Nihon Keizai said.
Fourth-generation cell phones, which will well succeed the current third-generation such as the FOMA system developed by Japan's NTT DoCoMo Inc., are expected to enable throughput of 100 megabits per second -- equivalent to the speed of fiber-optic communications.
They are also expected to allow users to watch crystal-clear television images on their displays even on fast-moving trains.
The three countries are to adopt the same stance at international conferences designed to decide on global use of frequency bandwidths -- a crucial point in spreading fourth-generation cell phone services.

There is a large group of people that will never bother with 3g. As things are moving so fast, massive groups of consumers are happy to skip every other generation of tecnology. (i had a pentium 2 pc, then a p4)etc

i will happily wait for 4g.

Wow. If they start now it should be working better an 3G is now. Remember that over there 3G is a few years old. Although in camera technology in mobiles there about a year ahead. This message was posted from a Nokia
