Hi all....

Haven't posted on here for some time, but this one's slightly off topic....but knowing you guys I'm sure you'll be happy to help in any way you can....

Basically after a long time using my P800 with oggplayer for music I've decided to plump for the ipod and have today aquired the ipod mini (in silver )

BUT UNSURPRISINGLY I have a problem .... I am charging it through my PC via USB 2.0 .... asit can and does.... BUT the screen displays "Do Not Disconnect" whenever it is connected to the pc/syncing/charging .... but IF all I require is CHARGING and I am NOT using other fuctions of the USB connection (such as loading tunes onto the ipod), IS IT possible to USE THE IPOD TO LISTEN TO MUSIC .... as currently I can not seem to do anything but watch the screen flash with "Do Not Disconnect" and watch the 'charging icon' flash!!

Any help much appreciated guys, ta.

Good question. And i, for one, appreciate threads about ipods being started in the p900 forum, since both devices kinda go hand in hand as being the flyest gadgets in their respective genres! I dont know the answer to your question, but one would assume all functions would operate during charging. This may not be true on this occassion though, obviously. Where did you get your mini? And furthermore, does anyone know where a 20gig can be found for a reasonable price? I noticed theyre significantly cheaper if purchased in the states, but does this pose a problem in terms of compatability with british power and appliance regulations?

think about it this way, a reputable manufacturer like apple would want the best postpurchase performance for their products, so why would they implement such a warning, only for it to be unessesory? they want the best for their products so this is why. ps, m dad is quite a big cheese at apple and he got me an ipod in all titanium, that doesnt scratch, and more gigs. its gr8

He means that since there is a dialogue stating "do not remove from charger" or whatever, then it must be there for a reason. It must mean that there is good cause to do what it says. However the argument remains that this dialogue would be more fitting during file transfer; it does seem odd that the device wont function when charging.

@Ole

I have the normal size iPod and it can be played while being charged however, you can try this. I am not familiar with the functioning of the Mini, but if you have the option, use the Mini as a hard drive. There is a menu selection option that will allow this. Infact, once you have the Mini connected, look into iTunes and right click on the iPod. There should be an option to "use as a hard disk" or something like that. Once you select this, your system will see the Mini as a hard disk. Ok, now the fun part. If you look down to the bottom right hand of the iTunes screen, you will see an eject button(icon). If you click this, the iPod will now unmount and the "do not disconnect" warning will go away. From here, you should be able to play the Mini while it is charging. Do however remember, that the Mini will not automatically update except for the one time when you reconnect it. If you load music to iTunes, you will have to tell iTunes to send it to the Mini manually. Hope this helps.

@Switchblade. Got mine in the States and it was cheap. Joke. There are a few places that will deliver international for a cheaper overall package.

If you are using iTune with your desktop, click eject iPOD and the "do not discount" message will go away. You can also disable the auto-sync whne connected in iTune.
