A frind wants a p900 but it seems O2 have stopped doing the free offer - on the £45 a month tariff. Any other offers - he would like it unlocked so he can use his t-mobile simm in it.

Thanks

Scott

Only get one from Orange if you don't want to be able to update the firmware on it!

Unlocking a phone allows you to use other network SIMs in it. Not all operators lock their phones, but Orange do - so if your friend bought an Orange phone he would either have to use the Orange SIM or he would have to get it unlocked to use the T-Mobile SIM.

Firmware is basically the software that the phone runs, rather than the software that you install yourself. If there are bugs in the phone they can (sometimes) be fixed with new firmware. ATM Orange don't allow firmware updates at all AFAIK, but other networks do. My phone is stable and running a very old firmware version, so you don't have to upgrade it, but you have the option.
