For some reason, McDonalds thinks they need to offer Wi-Fi hotspots in their restaurants. The initial price plan looks like US$2.95 for 2 hours or $29.95/month unlimited, and some sort of 'roaming' plan to share minutes with other Wi-Fi providers. My initial thought is that more hotspots at restaurants is a cool idea, then I try to remember the last time I spent more than 10 minutes in a McDonalds. Truth is, it's not the kind of place that I'd ever want to hang out. I know the playground is cool and all, but let's be a little realistic here.

Why would people take their laptops to the macdonalds to use wifi between the yelling kids? Maybe it is because here in the Netherlands wifi isn't that populair yet ( at least i got it at home )

I don't see it being a success. mcdonalds patrons are generally familes, backpackers, kids and the like. generally not the type of people who will have wifi gadgets, at least not at this time, and not the type of people who are likely to spend that much money or time in a fast food restaurant. maybe in some years when wifi is built into everything...

It would have more success when wifi is built into mobiles and more pda's. Then people could check their email or maybe if there are such applications they could use skype to make calls thru the internet at the wifi accesspoints

Isn't it a good thing?

At least that should mean theres an easy to spot place to go wifi at. Besides the price will drop when the novelty has worn off. Lets face it you dont have to sit in there with all the greasy kids to use it. Just have paid and have the settings for your device.

Thankyou golden arches for all the phone cells you provide also!

(They put transmitters in the Arches too dont you know?)
