Gametrac Europe has renamed both itself and its eponymous handheld games console in preparation for the device's launch this summer.

When it ships, the kiddie-oriented console-cum-phone-cum-multimedia device will be branded as the Gizmondo.

According to the company, the Gametrac name was just "a project name for out strategic partners", but its press statement reveals the real reason for the change: "pending legal issues concerning the use of the Gametrac name". The company did not say who had raised those 'issues'.

To avoid such legal entanglements, the new name was given an "early announcement" ahead of the console's showing at E3 in May.

It's only just started shipping its Gizmondo handheld games console but Tiger Telematics has already said it plans to challenge the likes of Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, HTC, PalmOne and Research in Motion with a smart phone product.

Dubbed 'Bizmondo', the unit is essentially an enterprise-oriented version of the Gizmondo, incorporating that machine's GPS support, GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its MP3 audio and MPEG 4 video playback features.

The announcement follows Tiger's acquisition of UK-based corporate-oriented real-time application delivery software developer Integra SP. Integra's AltioLive product essentially provided a way of connecting clients to enterprise applications through a browser-launched Java client. Such a system would naturally form the foundation for Bizmondo's push email/PIM functionality and provide the ability to tie the handheld into enterprise applications and data.

Integra will continue to develop, support and offer AltioLive. And presumably it will in due course promote Bizmondo to its corporate customers, among whom it counts heavyweights in the financial services sectors, including Nasdaq, Deutsche Borse, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland, Coutts, Bank of America and ABN Amro. Other customers include Reuters, Bloomberg and Sun Microsystems.

The acquisition requires Integra shareholder approval but if that is granted, the deal will be completed by the end of the month. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Earlier this week, Tiger announced its acquisition of troubled UK games developer Warthog for $8m.

Gizmondo, the dark horse of the handheld console race, is set to show "incredible" new technology at the world's largest videogames trade show, E3, in Los Angeles later this month. Colors, Gizmondo's own gang-warfare game has already been revealed to use GPS location data as part of the gaming mechanic. The new announcements focus on Agaju: The Sacred Path, which is set to feature "Augmented Reality" and "Gyroscopic Camera" technologies. Quite what these buzzwords mean is down to the self-facilitating media nodes amongst you to work out. Also set to feature is a game using GPRS mobile signal data.

I'm not going to turn this into a "which handheld is the better one"-thread but I'd say that I like the Gizmondo better since there are so many more stuff you can do with it than the PSP.
But I felt a little sad when I heard it was going to cost 3200kr here in Sweden. But then I might be able to get a Giz and games for it a bit cheaper since the person living next door has a brother who works at Indie Games, who are one of the few in the world developing games for the Giz, and that another one I know is friend with the two persons who's are incharge of selling the Giz to stores, they have contract for the entire EU.

Qoa

(But I agree that the PSP is more beautiful)
