That voice you're hearing may not be coming from your head, but your mobile phone. Siemens mobile is using technology from SVOX AG that will help its phones speak to the owners.
Siemens has teamed with SVOX, a text-to-speech specialist, to give its wireless phone users intelligent helpers, known as Smart Avatars, to read e-mail aloud by talking to the user.
"Making our intelligent avatars speak with their own voice gives them real virtual personalities," Siemens mobile project director Bernd Holz auf der Heide said.
Smart Avatars are designed to help keep users organized. They act like a personal assistant, says Siemens, in that the avatars can postpone a meeting if, say, a flight is late, by informing other meeting participants via SMS. On the lighter side, the "helpers" can scan the Web to find new MP3 songs, ringtones or downloads.
