So I was using miniGPS for the first time in bed the other day and logged the cell I was in.

Just now, at my desk yards from my bed, however, the programme is telling me that I'm at a completely different cell. Which I find strange.

Can anyone point me to any information on how mobile phone cells in the UK work, ie. radius of a cell, a list of cell numbers (?) and whether numbers change dynamically as seems to have happened?

Thanks.

the size of a cell can be very different depending on where the cell is located. In cities the cell size is quite small (a few blocks per cell, sometimes even smaller) to be able to have a high capacity. But out in the countryside where capacity is not that important the cell radius can be over 10km.
The cells does overlap eachother a bit so the signal will not be lost when moving in areas near the edge of a cell, the phone uses the cell in witch it gets the best signal. Meaning, you are probably in such area, where two cells overlap, and moving just a few meters will switch cell (and basestation if the cell is on another basestation).

the cell id is always the same in the cell, this never change. However, there are a few different channel numbers in the cell, so this can be different from one time you are in a cell to another time.
