no - themes cannot corrupt your phone in any way.
What can happen though is if you make a theme using different images everywhere you can - and you dont optimize the size of the images properly - then the phone could feel slower in reaction because it has to "load" the images used when you move around in menus.
If you create a theme using no images at all - but only colors - then the phone reacts quicker. So every time you have to argue speed of menus with a nokia fan - make sure you load such a theme first

well that would suggest that the theme in use is a tad too large. Try deleting it from our 'my themes' folder and then install the classical theme.
Personally i've never come acroos the problem with any themes but, much like spawn says, it sounds a lot like the theme may be too large to handle for the pone and simple taking too many resources whilst opening up.

that to me deffinately sounds like a memory thing, i have had the same myself, just delete some excess themes or ringtones or whatever, and should sort it out, but believe me a theme can possible corrupt your phone

can or
cannot
because it cannot. A theme is a very basic file: a couple of images stuck in a .tar-archive. They
cannot corrupt your phone in any way.
If a .thm file (=.tar archive) is already 'corrupt' when you donwload it the phone will not open it anyway and prompt you to delete it.
however, items that are too large will make your phone sluggish and reduce it's performance.
