whats more concerning is why it costs £7+ for sellers to post the product from the USA or Hong Kong. Memory cards weigh nothing, and the packaging that they come in is fairly small.

Airmail is expensive you know even for light items. Plus they can make extra money of you.

while it might cost £5 to make them (or less) it costs millions to develop them and those development costs have to be recovered.
as for shipping from US. I get most of my cards (256mb, 512mb duo pro and 512mb and 1gb SD cards) from US on ebay and have never paid more than a fiver

I think the reason can also be compared with the position one faces with inkjet printers and consumables to some extent...
Following this analogy, you get the printer, your ink runs out, you have to get more or the whole thing was a waste of money... the point is you HAVE to get a replacement cartridge in order to use the original device... cars and petrol are similar ! (but don't get me started on over priced insurance, unless you're over 60!)
Being a multimedia device, the P900 is crippled with only 32MB of memory... cunningly expounded through the inclusion not only of an MP3 player, but of MP4 also... these types of files just wll not fit nicely on smaller cards in any number...
Digital cameras are the same... companies supply on average 16MB of memory, yet the average file size for some cameras at 4 and 5 megaxpiels reaches the 1Mb mark easily... unless your "investment" of several hundreds of pounds is to be wasted, you have to get more memory...
Further, is Sony's proprietory memory storage system of the memory stick being peculiar to the Sony range, with only one or two other manufacturers allowed to create memory sticks, thus eliminating competition... for SD or CF cards, numerous companies have the opportunity to create solutions... thus opening up the market...
To eb fair though, I do not think that £40 for a 128 mb card is all that bad now... i paid around £30 for a branded SD card of the same size... so the difference is closing...
