why is the soon to be available on SE push to talk so unpopular? if it means free chat to people in range, it seems like good idea to me. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick and it's going to be another money spinner for the carriers?

well, it's we hate it over in the U.S. because that's what everyone with their cheap-ass nextel and boost phones have used for
years and it is so annoying. it's actually not that bad now because everyone realized how much nextel sucks. but about a year or two ago they started to offer coast to coast "direct connect walkie talkie" as they call it so i hope it doesn't pick back up.

Currently the emergency frequencies of Fire, police etc and Nextels are overlapping. So they have to resolve that first. But it would be a good feature. The P900 is ready for it as far as I know.

It's free talk time isn't it?
Nothing wrong with that imho... although if it's only to ppl 'in range' that's a bit shite imho.... however the US 'coast to coast' deal isn't bad

Actually it's not free talk time. You are alotted a certain amount of Walkie Talkie minutes. SprintPCS has Readilink, where you get your Readilink minutes, Verizon had only one phone which could do this (can't remember the model number), Nextel's had it, don't think Cingular WS has it yet, or AT&T WS, but it's so pathetic. You'd think it'd be unlimited, but it's not!

It sounds like just another ploy to part us from our hard earned cash, I think I'll stick to text messages, and bluejacking
If you want to 'push to talk' for free, buying a short wave radio transeiver would be cheaper (apart from the price of the set!!)

It would also be interesting to know what 'range' they would provide us in the UK.

I think it might be a hype in Europe but curently the phones aren't available, the service isn't available and u have to get ANOTHER phone if u wanna use this service.Maybe in 2 years...and if u tell me that there r 2 operators providing this in Europe, that's STILL nuthin'...and yeah, Nokia has a phone with PTT, big deal- no1 will use it anyway
