I've just managed to get my bluetooth working with the help of the latest Widcomm driver. I am able to enable the bluetooth serial port service on the PC, connect to my p800 and use Opera to surf the net on my phone. What I want o know is is it possible to enable a bluetooth connection with my PC from my phone or is it always the case that the connection has to be instigated from the PC?

You could search for your PC using your P900, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to establish a connection that way.
Your best bet is to use the search as there are numerous threads devoted to this very topic.

Yes, my phone does find the PC when I do a search for bt devices in the vicinity but this does not enable me to enable the bt serial port service. Thanks for the advice though, I'll try a search.

It has to be PC initiated correct, but there is a hack to set it up automatically so that it connects the bt serial port whenever your phone is detected within range:
