At first glance it looks like it’s just somebody having a little fun with Photoshop, but this is for real: a new six-wheeled sports car from Italian automaker Covini Engineering called the C6W that they’re claiming is the first of its kind. Why the extra wheels? Besides the usual macho stuff of feeling superior to all the losers with four-wheeled cars, having four wheels in the front is supposed to improve traction by reducing lift and make it easier to take corners.

looks like someone wanted to beat the Thunderbirds movie to the punch

FAB 1
While the rest of the Thunderbird vehicles look almost the same as their TV counterparts there is one that has gone through a dramatic change. FAB 1 is no longer a Rolls Royce. Lady Penelope's pink limousine has been downgraded to a Ford. While you may think that her Ladyship and loyal butler Parker are now slumming it with the rest of us mere mortals it turns out that his in no ordinary Ford. Here is what Ford themselves had to say about the car, thanks to Coming Soon.net...

Ford's primary involvement with the movie has been to assist in the development of Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward's FAB1 limousine – a stunning pink, 27-foot, six-wheel/bubble canopy vehicle, which can transform between car jet plane and hydrofoil and features clear Ford Thunderbird design cues.

Thunderbirds producer, Tim Bevan, commented, "FAB 1 provides the first glimpse into the new-look 'Thunderbirds' movie. We hope to realize fully the genius of the original series and bring it to life for an entirely new generation worldwide."

Ford Design Europe led the design of the FAB1 vehicle and also delivered a number of 'virtual' concept vehicles for the movie. The Ford EX concept is also prominently featured in one of the movie's chase sequences and other Ford vehicles, including the new Focus C-MAX, will feature in appropriate scenes.

"For our design team, it was essential that the new FAB 1 captured the essence of the original – its size, power and sheer presence," explained Chris Bird, Director of Design for Ford of Europe. "The people that have worked on this car were already fans, so we hope the end result will please 'Thunderbirds' purists as well as the new generations of movie goers who will see it in action on-screen."

An even earlier six-wheeled sports car
So the Covini C6W, that six-wheeled sports car i reported on yesterday, isn’t actually the first sports car of its kind, as the company claims (they do acknowledge that there was a six-wheeled race car in the Seventies). Anyway, Simon Perry notes that the Panther 6, which came out in 1977, had six wheels, and was also a sports car.
