Hi guys,

There is a lot of software around for the Pn00 now. There are also various groups on Yahoo with cracked software.
Unfortunately there are no specific methods of protecting a Pn00 from mallicious software at present. no firewall or anti-virus software etc. Also no spyware, malware etc protection.

My question is how safe are we ??? Has anyone come across any mallicious code running on a Pn00 ??? Are we safe or in ignorance of the real dangers/risks ?

Anyone with any first hand experience of software damaging their Pn00 please comment here giving details of the circumstances and damage the done.

many thanks......

I dont just mean risk of a Virus. On PCs there are lots of nasty types of code that you can get inadvertantly that monitor and report what you do/access. On the Pn00 we load stuff off the net and use it but what are the real risks if any ?

I think it would be fairly easy to right a small utility and inbed code in it that say deletes all your contacts or scrambles the numbers on the fourth of July. Or changes your Mum's number to Bill Clinton's dry cleaners.

It may be that we are safe because nobody has bothered yet, but maybe not too.

The only problem I have had with downloaded software is the Win XP icon changer on the P800, I installed it and there were no icons on my P800. Had to do a internal format to get them back.

No instructions with the file, but I think I read somewhere that I didn't do something right.

ANY real native software you install can do precisely whatever it likes with your p900... wipe the filesystem clean or pretty much access anything stored on the phone and send it using gprs.

The same of course applies to any software on any platform, not just symbian/uiq (although in real multi-users os'es its usually only your own files that are at risk). Unless you wrote the application yourself or have the skills to completely reverse-engineer it, then you are at the mercy of the developer who wrote it. You either trust them and install it or dont.

yes bowman thats obviously true.

my point was that we all muddle along happily in the cosy glow of being 'ok on Symbian because nobody writes nasty code for such a small market'.

However, my question wasn't is it possible to write malicious code for this environment. It was has anyone come across or experienced any malicious code on a Pn00 ???
