I have found something very interesting on the net, so i appologise if this has already been talked about it. I found a phone made by sony called CMD-MZ5 music cellular phone, and guess what it comes with MAGIC GATE memory stick, from what i have found this isn't mem stick duo compatible. I have included some pics for you to see

Notice in the second pic there IS an adaptor for the headphones to use normal headphones.

magicgate is built ontop of memory stick and memory stick duo (i.e. you can get memory stick and memory stick duo with or without magicgate). The magicgate provides music licencing features and cards that have or do not have magicgate are all compatible with all memory stick devices, its just that some do not support the extra functionality provided my magicgate

edit: btw I had the MZ5 and it was pretty neat phone for its time

That kind adaptor should be included in any music playing phone.

But the big thing is, is it MEM stick Duo or normal mem stick?
Because if (SE) can fit a proper mem stick in that tiny little phone, then why wouldn't they use that in the S700. Doesn't make any sense to me.

All DUO sticks got the magic gate technology implemented already.

Anyway, magic gate is actually just another typical SONY way to give some annoying DRM management (which actually only means we customers have to pay for everything) a fancy name, so that people wont notive its in fact a pain in the arse to have that "feature" on board.

MagicGate means less data bandwith and less possibilites to distribute music from the stick to other devices.

Sheesh..

cheers,
hymie

While its not a big deal, I though I might just say that all 16mb and some 32mb duo's (the ones sold with P900 for example) don't have magicgate

on this page, for example, sony describe the 16mb duo as "For personal content and data only." whereas the 128mb they describe as "For both copyright-protected content and personal content and data" (they don't have a description for 32mb duo but if you have a P900 take a look at your duo)

@Dyce9984, sorry, missed that question. it was a standard memory stick. don't think duo was out at that time
