Can anybody tell me where the hobbit fits in. Wat order should lord of the rings and the hobbit be read in?

The Hobbit's the first book, dealing with Bilbo Baggins and how he came about the ring - and had an adventure of his own. It's set quite a few years (I forget how many exactly!) before the next book - LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. Then you get The Two Towers, then Return on the King
Hope that answers your question!

Of course if one is intent on reading the books in order, then one should read 'The Silmarillion' before 'The Hobbit'.

Then again, after reading everything you should read the entire History of Middle-Earth (something like 12 books), the Unfinished Tales, and the adventures of Tom Bombadil. After that proceed to learn elvish and become a 45 year old virgin with Frodo posters as your wallpaper.

lt is a true master of Tolkien's work who has read everything to do with Middle Earth and the Universe in which it is set.
It is a vast subject and one will find one forgets much of it, but it is truely fascinating.
