has anyone else noticed that a picture used as a wallpaper appear more pixelated than if it is viewed in the picture viewer? does anyone know if there is a trick to get around this?

It might be deliberate to facilitate faster startups, save memory or save space on C. Maybe you could copy the image into the correct directory on C yourself. This might bypass any code which resamples the image.
(This is just a suggestion; I don't KNOW that the OS does this.)
