Is firmware the software that a basic mobile uses?

The reason i asked is....

I've got a new phone and the network has changed things on it, startup screens, icons, turning off irDa, button shortcuts etc.

am i correct in thinking that if i get the firmware changed to the manufacturers original firmware, the phone will do what it's meant to and not what the network has done??
