Those of you who have played with the K700 "Try The Phone" demo on SE's site (http://www.sonyericsson.com/trythephone/K700/en/) may have noticed that the K700 does not have a great user interface for writing text messages.

To send an SMS you need to:

1. Click Down
2. Click in
3. Click in
4. Write your text message
5. Click continue

... at this point you are presented with a screen asking you what format you want the Text Message sent in. Bizarrely the default is E-Mail! The second option is Phone Number and the third is Phonebook lookup.
I wonder why on earth SE decided to do this? Did they not do a survey, which I am sure would suggest 98% of Text Messages are sent via SMS through the phonebook?! 1.5% would probably be via email and the remaining 0.5% through a number the user actually types in.

After this the UI is ok....

6. Scroll down twice to Phonebook lookup (up up once)
7. Click in
8. Scroll up/down left/right to find your desired contact & the desired contact number.

It seems an awful lot of unnessecary work to send an SMS - undoubtedly the first or second most common use of a mobile phone.

Having said that the T610, which I have had for almost a year and adore (mostly because of FMA, it's fantastic Bluetooth support and Themes) has an SMS input system that is just as bad!

If I were SE I would make it as easy as possible to send an SMS:

1. Move the Write Picture Message option to a second menu item. This would eliminate 1 unnecessary click. I am sure Picture Message sending will not overtake SMS any time soon.
2. When you have finished your text and click in you should get straight through to the phonebook. If you want to send your item as an email or to a number not stored in your address book then you can select 'More' and send it that way.

Any comments? I for one hope they make changes to the firmware to make SMS sending a little quicker and easier.

my 'write new sms' is the first short cut (standard in unbranded fw) and one often used.

I suspect the same thing can (and will) be done on the K700... so I'm not particularky bothered by it

Also, bear in mind that this demo is simply that, a demo. I doubt that it's intended to be a 100% accurate replica of a real K700. No doubt there will be minor (and some major) differences between the online demo and a real K700.

No that is not the case.
Once you select envelope icon you will get two alternatives.
SMS or MMS in Swedish (bildmeddelande).

I press left on my Z600 and it automatically takes me to "Write New" for SMS. The only thing that bothers me is that when I select a recepient, it starts with SIM Entries rather than contacts. I heard that newer FW has it where the initial selection is contacts.

I agree though that the t610 is a bind to send txts, even with a write sms shortcut. There are sooooo many key presses i often forget to press send at the end. This message was posted from a T610

Also with the K700, you can change all four joystick directional shortcuts.. so even if it is a problem, you can always assign a shortcut to it, and have 3 remaining !
